A MEANINGFUL, EXCITING, & EMPOWERING EXPERIENCE

Give Yourself a Competitive Edge by
Creating an Amazing College Application Package

BENEFIT FROM MY UNIQUE APPROACH,
INSIDER’S PERSPECTIVE, &
GREAT RESULTS

Get Yourself Into College™ gives you the step-by-step plan and expert guidance you need to create a cohesive, vivid, compelling, and authentic image of yourself in your application package.

Students in my program have been accepted to Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Stanford, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, the University of Chicago, Rutgers, the University of Southern California, and many other very good schools.

Don’t worry!

I don’t just work with students aiming for Ivy League institutions and the nation’s most selective schools (though I love working with you guys, too!).

I’m deeply committed to serving the needs of a wide range of young people and believe all my students possess special qualities, experiences, and gifts.

Here’s what one of the high school seniors in my 2012 program has to say:

“I have truly found a stronger sense of self from watching the modules. The ideas from our meeting continue to guide me for weeks after. Dr. Bernstein’s advice is priceless—it has helped me restructure my approach to applying for college, with more confidence and knowledge!”

As part of the Get Yourself Into College™ program, you’ll gain access to my perspective as a college English professor who has also served on an admissions committee and guided undergraduates through the process of developing applications for prestigious scholarships and graduate school.

I know what it takes—professionally and personally.

I’ve created my own successful application packages, which have helped me earn over $60,000 in funding from institutions like the National Endowment for the Humanities, the University of Notre Dame’s Center for Philosophy of Religion, and the Jewish Foundation for the Education of Women.

GET YOURSELF INTO COLLEGE™ PROGRAM

The online part of the program consists of four comprehensive educational modules that are jam-packed with valuable insights, effective strategies, and eye-opening case studies that help you put into practice all that you’re learning.

“Each session builds on a previous one, yet I like how the online sessions are divided and I can revisit a certain topic at any time. The online sessions also are a great guide for the applying process, as it clearly steps through each part, making it much less overwhelming!” ~ Cornell Admit (2013)

MODULE 1: HOW TO EARN GREAT RECOMMENDATIONS

“I wish I’d known these things when I started high school” is what many students say after watching the sessions in this module.

On the surface, it seems as though the recommendations are out of your control. After all, someone else is writing them.

However, I show you how to use the teacher evaluation and school report forms as a powerful catalyst for your own personal development and as a means of cultivating meaningful, authentic connections with your teachers and guidance counselor.

  • Learn exactly what it is your recommenders are asked; important factors that colleges consider when reading your recommendations; why schools value certain personal characteristics; how to think about and present yourself in new, more mature ways that are in alignment with your big goals; strategies for assessing your strengths and weaknesses; techniques for capitalizing on your strong points and improving your trouble zones; specific ways of helping your teachers and guidance counselor get to know you; how and when to ask for recommendations; and much more.

MODULE 2: YOUR CURRICULUM VITAE: WHAT IT IS, WHY YOU NEED ONE, & HOW TO CREATE IT

“Without Dr. Bernstein, my résumé wouldn’t be nearly as strong as it is now. She helped me arrange it so it would stand out and also highlight my strongest points. Her subtle approach to `branding’ and shaping an application was incredibly helpful.” Princeton Admit, 2012

A lot of students overlook (or just don’t pay sufficient attention to) the part of the Common Application that requires you to supply information about your extracurricular, volunteer, and work experiences. That’s unfortunate because this part of the application is very important.

  • Learn what admissions officers are looking for when they read this section of your application; strategies for filling out the list of highlights and writing the paragraph-long description of one of your experiences; why you shouldn’t attach a traditional résumé (even though the Common App form tells you that you can); what a curriculum vitae is, why you need to create one, and how to structure yours so that it provides admissions officers with an even more vivid sense of you.

MODULE 3: HOW TO WRITE INTERESTING, AUTHENTIC, & EFFECTIVE PERSONAL ESSAYS

“Dr. Bernstein helped me discover how to restructure the scheme of my essay and add excitement without sacrificing my originality.” Stanford Admit, 2012

You’ve probably heard all the banal advice about how to choose a topic. “Write about something that matters to you.” “Be yourself.” “Focus on some unique aspect of yourself.” “Tell a story that no one else could tell.”

While there’s truth to this generic advice, the problem is that it doesn’t help you actually find the right topic, angle, and focus that’s right for you.

Even books featuring sample essays fall short because they don’t show you how the statements connect to the larger picture of the students’ applications. Your personal essay isn’t read in isolation, so it must connect with the other parts of your material.

My method simplifies the nerve-racking process of coming up with essay topics (for the Common Application as well as college-specific supplements) and teaches you powerful strategies for writing your personal statements.

  • Learn specific strategies for coming up with compelling topics and angles that build upon the image you started developing in the other parts of the application; new ways of thinking about the essay topics offered on the Common Application; techniques for finding just the right scope for your essays; how to use anecdotes to illuminate your character, experience, and perspective; advanced methods of structuring your narrative; and effective approaches to revising, editing, and proofreading.

You’ll leave these sessions feeling empowered and ready to create an engaging, exciting personal narrative that will set you apart from the competition.

MODULE 4: STRATEGIES FOR FILLING OUT THE FIRST PAGES OF THE FORM

Every part of your application package matters, even the informational pages at the very beginning.

  • In this module, I’ll tell you what information you are (and are not) required to provide, and teach you how to most effectively fill out this part of the application.

You’ll leave these sessions feeling empowered and ready to create an engaging, exciting personal narrative that will set you apart from the competition.

These are just a few of the ways that I can help you during our hour-long sessions.

Dr. Bernstein is amazing! Unlike a typical college admissions coach, she doesn’t try to override a student’s voice with clichés or weigh down their essays and resumes with unnecessary information.

Having worked at a college for many years, she knows how the system works and how to best present oneself to admissions officers. Sometimes, it’s not about what a person has, but how they present it.

Plus, without Dr. Bernstein, my curriculum vitae wouldn’t be nearly as strong as it is now. She helped me arrange it so it would stand out and also highlight my strongest points. Her subtle approach to “branding” and shaping an application was incredibly helpful. In addition, she’s extremely down-to-earth and knows how to relate to students. I highly recommend her to any student, even the more aggressive or independent ones. Dr. Bernstein’s advice is invaluable!

~ Princeton Admit, 2012

Dr. Bernstein was a tremendous help in the college application process. Her amazing advice helped me get into my dream school as well as every other school to which I applied.

Throughout the summer and fall, I struggled with my Common Application essay and felt like I was lagging behind in completing my application for the early action deadline.

When I met with Dr. Bernstein in October, she quickly pinpointed the problem. Through our conversations, I discovered how to restructure the scheme of my essay and add excitement without sacrificing my originality.

She also helped me revise all of my college supplements and even the application attachments. In particular, Dr. Bernstein helped me edit my resume in a way that highlighted my skills so that my best achievements jumped out at admissions officers.

Dr. Bernstein is flexible, versatile, and always ready to help students.

Unlike other college admissions counselors who tend to standardize students’ essays and emphasize generic and cliché characteristics, Dr. Bernstein takes an approach that is fully student-oriented. Throughout the process, I felt that Dr. Bernstein took time to understand me as a person and then used this information to help me see how to get my own voice and personality to come through.

Dr. Bernstein has an amazing level of experience in helping students get to the schools they want. Despite this, she is incredibly practical and is always ready to learn from the students she works with.
